18th August 2023 Mt. Biking: Around Felixstowe Wind Direction: Wind Stength: Surf / Sea State: Air Temperature: Sea Temperature: Weather: cloudy Max Speed: 19.57 (knots - unless stated otherwise) Distance Covered: 12.57 mile (Nautical Miles - unless stated otherwise) Friday 18th August – bike **** Around Felixstowe including a picnic by the River Orwell – cloudy but warm. After yesterday epic near 50 mile windsurf on the River Stour at Wrabness I was hoping to make the most of the moderate easterly by foiling out to see the large fleet of Firefly’s competing in their National Championship off Felixstowe Ferry. The sun had disappeared today, in fact it was a funny light with only brief glimpses of sunshine, the breeze started well gusting to 18 knots but by the time I had done my exercises it had dropped back to 10 knots:( I went down to The Dip to take a few pics of the Firefly’s to send to the TV weather, then returned home to pack a picnic as Mag and I had decided to head out on our bikes. After some discussion we decided to bike to Levington Bay near Levington avoiding as many roads as possible! We aimed for our favourite tree lined route at the back of the Trimleys we even had to stop at a crossing for a massive container train to pass, Mag even got a wave from the driver:) The track was nice and dry and very quiet, just how we like it, the rudd in the little pond came to see us but unfortunately, we didn’t have any fish food in our rucksack, we must remember to fill up the container for next time! We then whizzed down the long lane past Loompit lake coming out on the beach by the Orwell just around from Levington, the river was like a mill pool with a family of grebes fishing with a bit of boat action too. It was a strange light, although cloudy/hazy you still had to screw your eyes up. We found a nice spot to enjoy our yummy picnic and the tide actually turned to head out as we sat there! We then took a different route back, over the huge green footbridge over the railway lines to Candlet Lane to Gulpher Road which we take all the way to the seafront. Around to the The Fludyers and take the prom to Bent Hill and home for a welcome cuppa. Storm Betty is passing through in the night with heavy rain and thunder and lightning with a breezy but sunny day tomorrow so hope to get out on the water somewhere depending on the windstrength?
